The Origin of Matcha

抹茶の源

Long before matcha became a global phenomenon, it was born in the misty mountains of Jingshan, China. As a Zen Buddhist ritual perfected over centuries, powdered tea whisked in hot water — 点茶 diǎn chá — traveled from China to Japan, where it was preserved for 800 years. Now, the story comes full circle.

Song Dynasty — 960-1279
The Birth of Powdered Tea
Monks at Jingshan Temple (径山寺) in Hangzhou develop the ritual of grinding tea leaves into fine powder and whisking with hot water — 点茶 diǎn chá.
~1050s
Scholarly Documentation
Cai Xiang codifies tea preparation methods. Emperor Huizong of Song later writes 大观茶论 (1107), elevating powdered tea to an imperial art form.
1191
Eisai Brings Tea to Japan
Japanese Zen monk Eisai (栄西) carries tea seeds and preparation methods from Jingshan Temple to Japan. Matcha becomes inseparable from Japanese Zen Buddhist culture.
1391
China Shifts Course
An imperial policy shift under the Ming Dynasty discontinues powdered tea in China. Loose-leaf tea becomes the standard. Japan becomes the sole custodian of the matcha tradition.
Today
The Renaissance
China reclaims its heritage. Jingshan matcha is cultivated once again at its origin, combining centuries-old terroir with modern precision — ready for the world.
